During a recent trip to Cuba, I had a chance to explore and experience the country. Tourism in the country is increasing and many people, especially Americans are deciding if they want to go to Cuba this year. As you weigh your decision on whether a trip to Cuba is right for you there are a few things you should consider.
While you can read about my trip on what you need to know before traveling to Cuba, I also wanted to share why Cuba might not be the right destination for you.
You Don’t Like Bright Colors
One of the first things you’ll notice about Cuba are all the bright colors. Buildings all around the island are some of the brightest you’ll see. From pinks to blues to green to yellows. Really, a little bit of everything. If you’re not interested in spending an afternoon just strolling through the streets then Cuba might not be the right place for you.
You’re Not Interested In Learning About A Unique History & Culture
From indigenous cultures to colonialism to the Cold War to current events Cuba is filled with history and there is no way to escape it as you explore the country. On top of the museums, you’ll find the Cuban people are happy to share their story as well. And you’ll see political propaganda on most streets. If you’re not interested in learning about what makes Cuba, Cuba, then it might not be the place for you.
You Don’t Enjoy Live Music Or Want To Learn Salsa Dancing
Particularly in Havana and Trinidad, you’ll find live music just about everywhere you turn. On the street, in bars, and restaurants. The Cuban music scene is well alive. If you like to eat your meals in silence you might not find a spot to eat. Is dancing not something that interests you? Then you might want to watch out since there is a good chance someone will try and grab you out of your seat and get you on the dance floor.
Staying With Locals Isn’t Your Style
While there are some hotels and resorts, most travelers who go to Cuba stay in Casas Particulars. Best described as guest houses. If you’re looking for luxury in accommodations you might want to head to another Caribbean country. But, if you’re interested in getting to know what local life is like and meeting locals during your travels these cheap accommodations make for a great fit. The best way to book them is through Airbnb too, making them easy to find and access.
Tasty Rum Cocktails & Lazy Evenings Aren’t Of Interest To You
Not a fan of rum? Then you might not enjoy many of the cocktails being made in Cuba won’t be your cup of tea. Whether it’s a mojito, Cuba libre or canchánchara you’ll miss out on one piece of the fun that is Cuba. You just might not enjoy relaxing on a patio on one of the plazas in Havana with a mojito in hand.
You’re Not A Fan Of Seafood
While there is a perfection that Cuban food is lackluster and while it may not have the kick of other Caribbean cuisines there are many things you’ll want to enjoy on the island. If you don’t like seafood then you’ll miss out on some of the best. If a lobster dinner for just $8 or the chef’s fish of the day special for even less doesn’t sound like an exciting meal for you then Cuba cuisine might not be your style.
Smoking A Cuban Cigar On A Tobacco Farm Sounds Dull
Does a day trip to tobacco farms in beautiful Vinales sound like a waste of time? Even if you’re not a smoker, if you aren’t interested in learning about what it takes to make the famous Cuban cigars and who makes them, then you’re missing out on part of what Cuba is.
You Need To Constantly Be Online
Are you the person constantly checking their Facebook? Sending a Snapchat every few minutes? Then Cuba might be a struggle for you. Being connected in Cuba is expensive. Phone carriers will charge you an arm and a leg and Wi-Fi is very limited. If you aren’t looking forward to spending a few days or even few weeks off the web, and disconnected from the world then you won’t be able to enjoy your time in Cuba.
Taking In A Good View Is Overrated
You’d rather stay inside than see beautiful mountain views, overlooking valleys or breathtaking ocean views. Then you’ll be unable to appreciate the natural side that Cuba has to offer. If you don’t want to take a hike or a tour out to waterfalls or a day trip out to the beach then it might not be worth a visit.
You Don’t Like Relaxing On Caribbean Beaches
Speaking of beaches. If you don’t like spending a day on beautiful sandy beaches then Cuba might not be the best place for you. Whether you want a short trip to Santa Maria from Havana, spending a weekend at Varadero or head to Playa Ancon from Trinidad, as an island one of the reasons why to go to Cuba is its beaches.
Colonial Forts Bore You
Learning about the colonial history of Cuba and exploring the forts in Old Havana is one of the ways to do so. From nightly celebrations to historical tours. If you aren’t interested in wandering through this piece of Cuba’s history then you may not enjoy your trip.
Art Museums And Galleries Don’t Interest You
Beautiful art from the past few centuries can be found all across Cuba. If you’re not interested in exploring the museums with historical artwork and galleries supporting local artists then Cuba might no be for you. Otherwise, you’ll have a chance to both appreciate gorgeous artwork from throughout Cuba’s history.
You Don’t Think A Good Meal & A Drink For $12 Is A Steal
A good deal on a meal is overrated and you’d rather just eat at home. If you don’t think the restaurant specialty and a cocktail for under $15 is a good deal then you might not enjoy Cuba. While some food in Cuba is just average there are many places that will fill your appetite and at a steal compared to the states.
