As you drive from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe and head up to the northern side of the lake you’ll drive right through Truckee. It’s about 15 miles from Lake Tahoe and only a few from Donner Lake. Right in Tahoe National Forest, you’ll find a mountain town with local haunts, friendly residents and outdoor adventures to explore.
Whether you’re looking for a ski destination, to witness the snow melt turn into spring, swim in a mountain lake or hike along trails at the colors turn to fall, you can find a relaxing getaway in Truckee, California all year round.

Stay in cozy cabin digs
First things first, where to stay. As you make your way into Truckee you’ll come across the Hotel Tahoe Truckee. At this Best Western Plus, you’ll find a pool to jump into during the summer and fire pits to enjoy as the weather cools.
As you drive up you’ll get the cabin feel, exactly what you’re looking for as you head into the mountains. You’ll be greeted by friendly staff and directed to your room. Here you’ll find everything you need for a relaxing evening and place to lay your head at the Hotel Tahoe Truckee.
On top of all that, it’s perfectly located for exploring the area, the next two spots to grab a locally crafted beer or wine are only a block in either direction, it’s s short drive into Downtown Truckee to crash at the local diner for a bite, in the winter you’re a few miles from the Northstar Ski Resort and Kings Beach on Lake Tahoe is only a 15-minute drive.
Grab a craft drink
Within a few blocks from each other, you will find Truckee is home a top-notch winery and brewery. First, start at Truckee River Winery. Here you will find high-quality wine and a great place to waste away an afternoon. With a beautiful outside space where you can relax in the sun or play a game of bocce ball. Get yourself a carafe of wine, a great way to save a few bucks as they serve you a bottle without the extra costs of bottling.
In the other director of the Hotel Tahoe Truckee, you’ll stumble upon Fifty Fifty Brewing. From barrel aged to IPA to Belgian styles, you’ll find high-quality craft brews that will match just about any palette. And make sure to go hungry since their food is as good as it looks.
Eat at the local haunts
One thing about California’s small towns is you can find some of the best places to eat. Your getaway in Truckee will be no exception. Head into the quaint Downtown and you’ll find many to choose from. Grab a flavor packed breakfast or lunch filled with comfort food at a classic diner at Jax at the Tracks. A Diner, Drive-In & Dives place that actually holds up to its reputation. The restaurant is beyond adorable when as you feel taken back in time and you’ll leave stuffed and satisfied.
To class it up a little at dinner head over to Moody’s Bistro, Bar & Beats. On Thursday to Saturday nights, you can enjoy life music at this local haunt. Whether you want pizza, mac and cheese or a steak you’ll enjoy your meal and relax with a cocktail in hand.
Take an outdoor adventure
No matter what season there is something to do outdoors in the Truckee area. Hop on your skis or snowboard and head down the slopes at Northstar Resort. Grab your paddle board and sail out on either Donner Lake or just a dozen more miles away Lake Tahoe. Grab the nearest trail through the forest. Or even hop on a sailboat on the lake.
It’s one of the most beautiful areas you can find and a piece of California you shouldn’t miss.
