When you think of getting away for a trip to Nevada to relax by a pool, indulge on some delicious meals, and maybe a little night life, you probably think of Las Vegas. I was a bit surprised when I headed to Reno for a couple days that it made for just as good, and a much cheaper destination.
Most of us have to fly to Las Vegas, but Reno is a quick drive from Northern California. The rooms are just as nice but a percentage of the cost and without the hassle of crowds. Reno has everything you look for in Vegas but probably a less lavish version. Delicious restaurants, casinos to wanders, spas and pools to relax in and cocktails to enjoy.
Lavish but Affordable Accommodations
Many of the casinos in Reno have gone through recent updates, which is much more than you can say for some of the Vegas spots. The rooms have all the comfort and quality you can look for and the hotels are filled with amenities.
The Silver Legacy Resort is one of the recently refreshed options. It has an old school casino feel with all the updates. There is a pool a handful of floors up, with cozy seats, making it perfect to spend an afternoon relaxing out in the sun. The pool bar is also an ideal spot to enjoy lunch. One of my favorite ways to relax is lounging by the pool and this spot hit the mark.
There is just about every type of restaurant you’d want within walking distance of the property. We particularly enjoyed splurging on dinner at the Sterling Seafood & Steakhouse. The meal was delicious, and we did the early bird special that was a steal for three courses.
You can find a wide range of deals for stays out in Reno, some with additional perks added to an already low room rate. Before you book make sure to check out the deal site, my favorite here.
Relax Inside or Out
While Reno might not stay warm as long as vegas, for a good chunk of the year it is perfect pool weather. The pools in Reno are more simple, but also more laid back. Relax and grab a drink and spend your afternoon at a quiet pool.
On top of outdoor pools, you can relax with a trip inside to the spa. Pop in for a massage or treatment at the Silver Legacy Health Spa. Or one of my travel tips is joining a spot like Massage Envy, you don’t just get deals on massages at home, but can use them at just about any spot you travel to around the country. You still get a relaxing massage on your getaway without the extra cost.
Exploring the Casinos and Beyond
Many of the casinos are worth popping your head into. In the Silver Legacy, you’ll find the Rum Bullion’s Island Bar that has live music on the weekends and a great vibe. If you’re like me and don’t like to gamble, Circus Circus is always fun. I’d rather spend a little money playing carnival games than losing it at a table. This year I even got to take home a minion.
You can’t enjoy Nevada without a good neon sign, so don’t forget to walk down by the big welcome to Reno sign and snap a photo.
When you’re ready for a break from the casinos hop to Peg’s Glorified Ham n’ Eggs for breakfast or lunch. You’ll end up with a huge plate of amazing food. If grits are your thing you’ll find great ones here, or if you’d prefer hashbrowns they are some of the best I’ve had. Absolutely worth a stop in this little diner. The food was amazing and the staff was fun and friendly.
Once you’ve filled up walk across the street and explore Sundance Books & Music. I could have spent hours exploring this beautiful old building. You’ll find great books and quality staff recommendations, fun and quirky trinkets and a selection of music to explore.
Enjoy an Easy Getaway
A couple days in Reno can be a perfect break from the rest of life. It’s only a couple hours drive from Sacramento and a beautiful one at that. If you’re heading back to California, you can even stop in Tahoe for a meal and a view or find your way out onto the lake.
Hit the pool, grab a drink and relax with a quick getaway to Reno. If you’ve already had a chance to relax in Reno, where were your favorite spots?
